Manuscript Abstract
This paper briefly reviews data collection methods in both wireless sensor networks and mobile sensor networks for energy saving purposes. The emerging techniques to process data transmitting in the networks, compressed sensing (CS), are introduced to be able to apply for sensing applications. The CS techniques offer to sample the sensing data and use a small certain number of measurement to reconstruct all data from the networks that need to be observed. This significantly reduce data transmission in the networks. More important, the paper points out interesting topics to be exploited not only for research work but also for real systems. There are many ways to integrate CS into a system or a network for sampling data. CS reconstruction can be applied easily based on the sensing data correlation, sensor positions, mapping sensors, sensor collaboration, sensor mobility, data routing, etc. In each topic, the paper suggests optimal points for the networks to consume the least power that either prolong the network lifetime or reduce the cost.
